Sex Therapy

What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that addresses concerns related to human sexuality. One or multiple people can seek sex therapy (it's not just for couples!). Working with a sex therapist can help you gain a deeper understanding of your sexuality, your gender identity, your relationship to your body, and your relationship to sex. Whatever concern brings you to this kind of self-exploration work, sex therapy provides a safe and judgment-free environment to work towards your goals.

Who Can Benefit from Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy isn't just for couples, and it isn't just about having better sex (but that is a great reason to get started!).

Some common reasons to explore sex therapy include:

  • Sexual "dysfunctions": Including challenges with desire, arousal, or orgasm, or pain

  • Painful sex: Get support managing painful sex, pelvic pain, dyspareunia, vaginismus and other pain conditions

  • Intimacy concerns: Address fears, anxieties, or barriers to building the relationships you want and need

  • Identity questioning: Gain a deeper understanding of your sexuality, sexual orientation, relationship orientation, and gender identity

  • Trauma: Heal your relationship to your body and sex after trauma

  • Out of control sexual behaviors: if you have wondered if you might be experiencing "sex addiction" or sexual desires or behaviors that feel out of control, a sex therapist can support you in achieving your goals around deepening self understanding and managing behaviors that are unhelpful or dangerous.

  • Sexual health education: Getting guidance on sexual health and safer sex practices.

  • Nonmomogamy: Get support in beginning a journey of non-monogamy, opening a relationship, or polyamory

  • Kink: Exploring your desire and getting support in building a fulfilling kink practice in a judgement-free zone

  • Asking yourself, "is this normal?" (and worrying about the answer)

What Will Your First Sex Therapy Session Be Like?

Similar to any kind of talk therapy, we'll spend time in our initial session talking about:

  • Your history: It's important for your therapist to get to know the whole person behind your treatment goals.

  • Your goals: We'll talk about your reasons for seeking therapy and explore what you hope to achieve in our work.

  • Your questions: About sex therapy, your personal challenges, or whatever comes up. "I promise, that is normal" is an answer sex therapists give happily, and often!

  • Treatment planning: We'll discuss how we can approach reaching your goals for therapy.
